The young prosecutor, Kornev – a man who still believes in the archaic notion of justice – comes from a backwater province, a place where the rule of law is a distant whisper. He stumbles upon something that reaches the very core of the capital's power structure. Watching this film is like holding your breath for two hours on the edge of a frozen lake. Sergei Loznitsa has always had a way of dissecting power, but this time, there is a deep anxiety that gets under your skin. The cinematography is restrained, using long shots to capture emptiness. Alexander Kuznetsov is brilliant. He portrays a man as the system starts to transform the very thing he seeks to destroy. The film makes you wrestle with moral dilemmas. Is truth a guide, or a fire that consumes the one who carries it?
